Wayne's World: GA Reflections from Wayne Yost

Day 4: Committees Are Finishing Their Work

27 June 2000

It is "true confession" time. I blew off most of today, Tuesday. I needed some down time before the Assembly began considering the multitude of business coming before it.

Yesterday at noon was the Synod luncheon and last night the Executive Presbyters of our Synod gathered for dinner to bid farewell to long time EP, David Vogan of Huntingdon and Northumberland Presbyteries. It was a good time together and we each had opportunity to express to David our thanks and best wishes. We ate on the Queen Mary. This was the same location of the Moderator's reception. At one point the receiving line was nearly an hour long. I wonder if Syngman has an arm and hand left on his body.

All the Committees seemed to have completed their business at a reasonable hour. Our Overture dealing with funding of the Council of Military Chaplains had some effect. The Council will be funded at about one-half the amount our Overture sought for the next two years while a study is conducted on how the Council might continue to be related to the General Assembly.

On Wednesday, Erin and I will host a dinner for those of our Presbytery who are here for the Assembly. This is always a good time for our folks to be together and to relax for just a bit on this first night of considering Committee reports.

Continue to pray for the Assembly. The recommendation is coming to the Assembly to send a proposed Amendment to the Book of Order which would explicitly prohibit the use of church facilities for and the participation of any church officer (deacon, elder, minister) in the "blessing of same sex unions or any relationship which does not maintain fidelity in marriage and chastity in singleness." No matter what happens there will be members of the Presbyterian Church which will not agree with and will feel hurt by this action.

Yours in service to Christ and the Church,
Wayne A. Yost, executive presbyter
