June 10, 2001 Once again, I was taken with the opening worship of the Assembly. The Word was preached, mission personnel were commissioned for their work, communion was shared, and we sang to the glory of God. Syngman Rhee, the Moderator of the 212th General Assembly was the preacher. The service was a good worship service, but seemed to lack the zest, the hair raising thrill, of some former services. The wide diversity of our church was evident in the several people who were participating in the leadership of the service. As the call for the offering was given a moth began to flutter in front of the area where Kent, Erin and I were seated. It was commented that it has escaped from a Presbyterian wallet being opened. This afternoon Commissioners and observers are enjoying a beautiful day in the river front park with a picnic and entertainment. They were led in procession by a Scottish Pipe Band. Even though I am of mixed descent (German, English, Welsh and who knows what else) I do thrill at the sound of the pipes, the trill of snare and the percussive beat of the base drums. Tonight the Commissioners will gather in their respective committees. The committee meetings are closed to all others as the committees get organized and engage in come group building. This is important time for the Commissioners and Advisory delegates. They come from all over the nation to consider the business which will be before them. Getting to know one another without the prying eyes and ears of the official, and unofficial press, and observers is necessary if they are to work together Monday and Tuesday to develop recommendations for action by the Assembly beginning Wednesday afternoon.
Yours in service to Christ and the Church,
