Curriculum in a New Millenium

There's been a curriculum revolution! The best curriculums feature a hands-on, interactive approach. The Presbytery of Kiskiminetas recommends the following curriculum for children through grade 6.

  •  BibleQuest: The Presbyterian Church(USA)'s official curriculum. The Bible Quest approach helps learners to understand the Bible as a story: to encounter, interpret, and live the story in the world as disciples.

  • FaithWeaver: a curriculum from Group Publishing with a special Presbyterian Directors' Manual from Presbyterian Publishing House.  FaithWeaver is available in both print and electronic versions. The website is a look at the way we will be doing educational preparation in the new millennium. Includes "pastor connect" and "teacher tips" sites.

  • Firelight:  from Augsburg Publishing. Firelight Bible Learning Curriculum is an exciting new curriculum that teaches age-old stories in brand new formats.  Augsburg also publishes Witness, a high-quality "traditional" curriculum, and Life Together, based on the Revised Common Lectionary. A comparison chart showing the features of each curriculum is here

  • Seasons of the Spirit: Our vision is to provide God's people with lectionary-based, ecumenical resources that empower all ages to be transformed in Christ as they: explore meaning and mystery in the Bible; celebrate in worship, sacraments, education, and service; engage in ministries of love, justice, and witness; and live in inclusive communities of faith shaped and led by the Holy Spirit.

  • Smyth & Helwyss Publishers: "A Breath of Fresh Air". Independent publishers of "thoughtful books," they offer curriculum:  FaithSteps for Children,  Intersections for Youth. (They also have adult materials.) The Intersections Website, with a discussion/reflection area for youth and teacher helps is a budding curriculum/website interface out there.  and Smyth & Helwyss publishes the Habitat for Humanity VBS "Under Construction" . The Heart for Missions VBS is a Christian education resource that combines solid biblical teaching and practical Christian service, using a medical motif to help children learn the importance of helping others. It is a hands-on approach to missions; children don't just learn about missions, but actually engage in missions.

children. Perfect as a midweek, children’s church, or Sunday school
resource, BibleZone® offers active, high-energy lessons with a solid
    biblical base.

  • Exploring Faith:  Exploring Faith® is a four-year Bible study for Sunday school that enables children to experience God through Jesus Christ. Children and the adults who live and work with them will experience together, in Christian community, the stories and messages of the Bible in ways appropriate to the children's increasing maturity through lessons that provide opportunities for discussion and ideas for activities.

  • Active Learning Associates:   Publishers of fine resources and modules for "hands-on" learning. The primary author is Phyllis Wezeman, who's written more than 400 books -- and led 2 Teacher Workshops for Kiski Presbytery Day!

  • The Inviting Word: A Out-of-Print Lectionary-based curriculum from the United Church of Christ. Worth trying to track down "legacy" copies of the wonderful "ViewBooks" filled with worship-centered art and poetry.
