The Training Program

Course-Based Training

Pittsburgh Seminary, and a group of participating presbyteries from the western part of the Synod of the Trinity, sponsor a cooperative training program for the classroom-based portion of ALP/CLP training. Currently, there are 3 locations for trainings: Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA; Waynesburg College; and, beginning in the Fall of 2001, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Each venue features a different approach to the timing of ALP/CLP training. Westminster offers a 3 year course, with the first 2 years giving basic training for Authorized Lay Preachers, and a third year of advanced training for Commissioned Lay Pastors. The Pittsburgh Seminary Program will be an accelerated program, offering all 18 courses in 2 years, rather than 3.

Each learning year consists of 3 trimesters.

Trimester 1: September, October, and November
Trimester 2: December, January, and February
Trimester 3: March, April, and May

3 courses are offered each Trimester. The classes meet one weekend (Friday evening/all day Saturday) per month. The Westminster Program holds classes the First and Third Trimesters, with the content and structure of Trimester 2 up to individual presbyteries.

At home study is assigned as part of these courses

Individual presbyteries may assign mentors and any additional requirements during the training period. Click here for the Mentor Program in the Presbytery of Kiskiminetas

The all-inclusive cost per Trimester is around $450. This figure varies depending upon the number of students enrolled. It is up to presbyteries to set any fees for Trimester 2.

10 people are needed at each site in order for the program at that site to be viable

Participating presbyteries have included Kiskiminetas, Redstone, Shenango, Washington, Lake Erie, Beaver-Butler, West Virginia, Pittsburgh
